The Sangre de Cristo Range spans south-central Colorado, from I-25 on the east to about US 285 on the west and the New Mexico border to about Salida and US 50. The 14ers in this area are characterized as being steep, dry, and remote. While 4x4 road access exists for most of these mountains, beware. We're talkin' real 4x4's - your factory fresh Ford Expedition will not make it. Those of you who've driven the Como Road and the South Colony Lakes Road can back me up on this...justrust me on this one. Also, some 14er trails pass through private land. That being the case, make sure to get permission to access the land before climbing.
