The Elk Range is located between the glitzy ski resort of Aspen, and the not-quite-so glitzy ski town of Crested Butte. While there are only six 14ers in the Elks, they are six of the most difficult climbs in the state. A couple have nontechnical approaches which require only some steady hands and steely nerves, and all of them are generally considered expert terrain. The peaks are characterized by steep towers, crumbling rock, and monolithic summits. All these peaks have claimed their share of hikers and climbers over the years, so remember that the Elks are not to be underestimated.
