| The last thing most people expect in the most mountainous state in the union is a desert complete with shifting sand dunes. Well, we've got one of those. The Great Sand Dunes National Monument are located in the San Luis valley, nestled up to the Sangre de Cristo mountains, and look like a piece of the Sahara that someone plopped down next to the massif. Although there's a perfectly good geological explanation for the dunes' existence, I won't get into here. Complete with visitors centers, picnic areas, camping, and so on, this place is quite a novelty for natives and tourists alike, and is a lot of fun for camping or just climbing on and around. If you're really into it, bring an old pair of skis or a snowboard and give yourself a unique ride. |
