The Durango and Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad has been a tourist mainstay of the southwest area of Colorado since just about anybody can remember, and with good cause. The train has been running between Durango and Silverton for over 100 years, passing through some of the most spectacular scenery in the United States. The trail makes daily runs (see the sites below for exact schedules) from Durango, running beside the Animas River and winding through valleys and canyons in the San Juan National Forest to Silverton, a small town about 45 miles north of Durango. For you peak-baggers out there, the train is pretty much the only way into the Chicago Lakes area...you hop on in Durango and disembark at Needleton for the hike to get to Sunlight, Windom and Eolus. All sorts of cool events are centered around the railroad, including the grueling Iron Horse Classic cycling event. Check it out!
