| One of America's newest National Parks! The Black Canyon of the Gunnison became a national park in early October 1999. This scenic park lies just north of US 50, east of Montrose, and west of Gunnison. The Black Canyon features breathtakingly steep and narrow chasms, carved out by nature over the millennia. Not so much for climbing, but for scenic beauty it's hard to beat. No other canyon in America features such a combination of steep canyon walls, depth, and narrowness. Just don't get to close to the edge! Adjoining the area to the east is the Blue Mesa Reservoir, one of the larger bodies of water in Colorado. The fishing and boating are excellent, I'm told. |
