The Arkansas is one of the premier rafting rivers in the country, if not the world. Buena Vista, Salida and Cañon City serve as rafting hubs, taking about a zillion people a year through Brown's Canyon and the Royal Gorge. This is some serious fun, and you don't even have to be able to swim! There are dozens of rafting companies out there, so do your research to find the most reputable. You can find trips that are mild floats, or trips that some might consider crazy (the Royal Gorge and the Numbers stretches during early June cannot be beat). From my own personal experience, I would recommend American Adventure Expeditions. For those not into the rafting thing, there are plenty of opportunities in the area for fishing, mountain biking, non-14er hiking, camping, you name it. Despite the summer crowds, there is always the opportunity for peace and quiet and solitude, if that's what you're looking for!
