The entire town of Silverton is a National Historic Landmark. This small and isolated mining community has a rich history and heritage, to be sure. The town (12 blocks by 7 blocks...that's it) is surrounded on all sides by mountain passes and snowcapped summits. In the winter, when the roads close due to bad weather, there's no way in or out unless you happen to own a snowcat or helicopter. The 500 or so folks who call this place home year-round are a rugged breed indeed. These days, Silverton is supported more by the tourist dollar than the spare mining in San Juan county, and locals are proud to show off the history and landmarks of the area. For those of you planning a multiday excursion into the San Juans, Silverton makes are great place to acclimate (elev. 9100 ft.)..
