Lake City is one of many tiny towns in the south-central area of the state, about 50 miles south of Gunnison on Hwy 149, and many folks in the know call it one of Colorado's best kept secrets. Having spent a few days there while mountaineering, I can attest to that statement. Walking around town, the word that comes to mind is "unpretentious". Good folks in a charming town, and that's about that. Being so far away from the big cities, the stars at night blaze so bright you'll just have to sit down and stare for a while. Lake City's biggest claim to fame (or rather, infamy), is the Alferd Packer incident back in 1874. In case you've never heard of him, Alferd is Colorado's most famous cannibal. You can look up the details if you like elsewhere. Lake City is a wonderfully small place that offers a departure from modern life. The Crystal Lodge is recommended for a night's stay and for the food as well. The "Alpine Loop" scenic drive west of town is probably the most awe-inspiring thing you can do in a vehicle.
