| The last (or first, depending on the direction you're traveling) hope for civilization in Colorado on the I-70 corridor. Grand Junction is just miles from the Colorado-Utah border. The fair-sized city used to be a petroleum-mining hub until several large oil companies moved out in the 70s. They've bounced back, though, and have a thriving farming economy...much of which comes from the fresh fruit they grow out here. Orchards abound along the river valley, where the irrigation water is gold. Interestingly, some of the wineries in the GJ area produce vintages that you might feel put the California and European wines to shame. The Grand Mesa, southeast of town, is a beautiful spot to visit as well, provided your car can handle the relentless grade. |
