The Gateway to Rocky Mountain National Park. Make no mistake, Estes Park is a tourist town, and they know it. Stroll up Main St. or Elkhorn Ave. and you will run into t-shirt shops, food shops, souvenir shops, and more t-shirt shops. Everything is emblazoned with RMNP or Colorado in some fashion. In the summer, tens of thousands of people hang around town daily, so traffic and parking can be a pain in the arse. The cool stuff is off the main drag...the best restaurants and places to stay tend to be nestled down a sidestreet somewhere. The huge white building on the hillside north of town in the Stanley Hotel...a 4-star resort and Stephen King's inspiration for "The Shining"...the 1970 movie was partially filmed there, and the 1997 ABC miniseries was entirely filmed there. Kind of cool. Rocky Mountain National Park lies to the west of town, and is the ultimate destination of most of the tourists, who take a zillion pictures of elk and sheep and the views and of each other.
