One dubious distinction of Canon City the rather high number of prisons and detention facilities that dot the area... probably more prisons per square mile than anywhere else in the country. Among the local penitentiaries is the Supermax facility, which has held (or currently holds) the worst of the worst...mobsters, Unibombers, Shoe-Bombers, Oklahoma Ciy bombers, 9-11 conspirators...and so on, Despite all this, the town itself is surprisingly inviting, and the locals are friendly and open. Don't miss the Royal Gorge and the world's highest suspension bridge 5 miles west of town! Personally, my favorite way to see the bridge is from the class IV-V whitewater 1000 feet underneath it.
