Alamosa is a mid-size town (not quite a city) in the San Luis Valley in south-central Colorado. Most of the folks around town are either into agriculture or tourism (every city in Colorado is in to tourism, I think). The town is big enough to have most of the chain restaurants and hotels you'd be familiar with, but look a little deeper to find a number of great bed and breakfasts, and local eateries as well. The San Luis Valley holds a number of interesting distractions, apart from the impressive Blanca Massif and Sangre de Cristo mountains stretching to the horizon north. Head northeast to the town of Crestone for the world's most offbeat collection of new-age residents, Zen buddhism and non-mainstream spirituality anywhere. Along the way you'll pass attractions you'd never have believed, such as the Colorado Gator Farm and the UFO Watchtower...seriously!
